General tips
  • Tidy the garden of fallen leaves
  • Lift , divide and replant herbaceous plants any time from now till early spring if soil conditions permit.
  • Cover ponds with netting to keep out leaves.

Lawns

  • Trim your lawn, when the ground is not too wet. Lift the blade to leave about 3/4" of grass as a minimum.
  • You can aerate your lawn in late September or October. A garden fork works well for this. Rake sand into the holes to improve drainage.
  • Autumn is the best time to eliminate weeds from your lawn. Because weed seeds are not a problem during the winter months, your lawn has a golden opportunity to grow and fill in the patches where the weeds had flourished.

 

Containers

  • Plant winter pansies
  • Remove fading flowers regularly.
Beds & Borders

Annuals and biennials


 

Perennials

Roses

  • Reduce in size bush roses and train ramblers.
  • Remove crossing stems to prevent disease.
  • Take cuttings and plant in a slit trench. These will be available for planting on in a year.

 

Shrubs, Trees and Climbers
  • Plant groundcover, flat or gently sloped areas are best.
  • Take cuttings from buddlehia and plant in slit trenchs, or into 6" pots.
  • Consider adding some trees and order for November planting.
  • Arrange to have oversize trees reduced in November.

Vegetables

  • Cut down asparagus foliage and mulch area with manure or compost.
  • When leaves are yellow, cut down jerusalem artichoke plants.
  • Harvest chicory, ready for making chicons.
  • Lift remaining root vegetables for storage.
  • Plant winter lettuce.
  • Plant out spring cabbages.
  • Cut down peas and runner beans, leaving roots in the soil.
  • Burn brassica stumps to prevent spread of clubroot.
  • Cover root crops with straw or dry leaves to protect from frost damage.
  • Dig a compost trench for next years runner been bed.

Herbs

  • Prune back flower heads on shrubby herbs.
  • Mint, take root cuttings of mint now ready for a spring sowing.
Fruit
  • Fit greasebands to apple, pear, plum and cherry trees. Don't forget the stakes.
  • Pick all remaining apples and pears for storage before it frosts.
  • Prune currants and gooseberries.
  • Cut off remaining strawberry leaves and compost them.
  • Prune out old canes of blackberries
  • Lift and replant rhubarb.
Greenhouse
  • Remove shading now the days are getting shorter.
  • Take down greenhouse vines and lay them on the borders.
